In holland when someone doesn’t close the door behind their backs we say ‘Ben je in de kerk geboren?’ which literally translates to ‘Have you been born in church?’
@useless-netherlandsfacts

In the United States we say, “Were you raised in a barn?” It’s supposed to imply that the person was raised without any manners. But as people who frequently use barns have told me, you would never leave the barn door open because then the animals could get out.

In Italy when someone walks in a room and doesn’t close the door we say “abiti al Colosseo?” (and other variants), which translates to “do you live at the Colosseum?” because the Colosseum hasn’t got doors

In Bulgaria we say ‘Da ne jiveesh v peshtera?’ and it translates as ‘Do you live in a cave?’ and it both implies you were raised mannerless like in the stone ages and that you don’t use use doors b/c caves don’t have any

In my house we say, “What the fuck, dude?” because I live alone and when a door is opened by someone who isn’t me, it’s usually my cat slamming his face into it at maximum velocity before disappearing into the next room.

That last addition is beautiful

Yo I’ve never heard the Colosseum one, my mum usually said “sei nata in barca?” Which translates to “have you been born on a boat?”

a brief ASL lesson!

As some of my followers may know, I’ve become more and more hard of hearing over the past few months. The most difficult part of it, for me, is trying to keep up with group conversations, especially in crowded public areas. Trying to focus in on one voice at a time while everyone is talking over themselves is extremely frustrating, and it’s easy to feel left out.

So, I had an idea. One of my family members was born deaf so I grew up speaking ASL, and thought I’d throw together a handful of gifs as a little ASL lesson. It is for both deaf/HoH and hearing people, just some basic phrases to help each other out. I know this isn’t a lot but I know if my real life friends picked up these few words, it would mean a lot to me and I think other deaf/HoH people would feel the same.

Please know that ASL can be slightly different for everyone, so if a deaf/HoH person tells you an alternate way they sign something you can adapt!

Even if you decide to skip the lessons please share!

There’s a website where you can learn ASL (American Sign Language) on your own, free and it’s a 31 Day program! The woman on there, her name is Rochelle Barlow, she runs the site and she actually is a homeschool teacher and teaches ASL. I am passing this on to some of you guys cause most of y’all on here is open-minded and curious and it is something important to learn.

I truly believe this site is helpful for some people who can not afford to going to ASL classes, or someone like me that just enjoys learning something new. This site will help with that. Once you sign up you will put in your email address and Rochelle sends you emails on tips on how to sign, gives you practice sheets, and gives you your weekly videos. And its all online. No need to paying for anything. (Unless if you want to she has something very different to this program)

IMO and yes, this site is really amazing and is important because you never know if someone who is deaf or HOH needs help, if you end up losing your hearing ability this is something you will at least have on the back of your head, and it is just like any other language and should be taught.
