Spirits can understand more than just the spoken word! With some concentration and effort and discernment, you’ll find they pick up on thoughts as well as gestures. Case in point: I just saved the effort of saying an entire sentence to Eligos by doing the Kermit Flail instead.
I’m sorry, but this just is just too funny because like, I imagine this grand Great Duke of Hell actually understanding this mortal flail their arms mutely. Like, I can’t even.
That’s literally what happened yes. There’s really nothing that prevents them from understanding *flail arms,* in fact, arguably they’ll understand hand gestures more than many of our modern language quirks.
The Hell association is a modern invention, spirits such as Eligos trace back to Greek necromantic spirit work that predates the Christian transformation of the Greek underworld into the modern concept of Hell. (That’s how “Hell” ended up with locations like Tartarus in it after all… historically it’s really just Hades, which is a resting place for the dead with both negative and positive kinds of territories. The invention of a Hell hierarchy came later and is largely influenced by the time period it was invented in.)
